The 24 Hour Redesign Challenge

Dungeons & Dragons requires players to spend over 2 hours making a character and reading a 200+ pg book before playing

Strategy

Condense the information into more manageable content that removes barriers for both young players and new players

Proposed Solution

Implementing an AI chatbot trained on the rulebook to answer pertinent questions in a more friendly format, as well as turn the character creation into more of a madlibs/quiz style

Impact

88% reduction in onboarding time and 60% reduction in complex decision making

The Problem

Often times, there is a struggle with finding a group to play with. They either have their own game they've been running 20 years, or their group is at max capacity, or any number of other potential blockers. Not to mention, character creation alone can take up to 2 hours and involves reading through a 250-page book.

So what do we do about it? Well first, we need to shorten that onboarding for sure. Two hours is too long for anybody, let alone new players or younger players. From the first image, we can see that that the green diamonds representing complex decisions goes from 5 to 2 with our new proposed user flow. This is done by letting an AI (alias: Magus) make the character for you after answering a short quiz.

The Solution

Given that this was a 24 hour challenge, I focused on improving this one aspect of the app. I crafted a quiz that worked either by visual reference or MadLibs style questions.

Accompanying this was Magus, the trusty AI companion that acted like an advanced tooltip to help players with unfamiliar terms explained in a friendly way without the need for a 250-page book.
